Kinds of Idiom

Below the researcher would like to differentiate three kinds of idiom:

Ø Lexemic idiom

The meaning of lexemic idiom is idiom which collate with the familiar part of speech (Boatnar and Gate, 1975: v). Lexemic idiom is form of idiom which indicated a specific class of grammatical word, and an idiom can be nominal, adjective, verb or adverb.

Based on the classification of grammatical word class, lexemic idioms are distinguished based on Boather and Gate theory. There are 3 kinds of lexemic idioms, they are: Verbal idiom, Nominal idiom and Adjectival idiom.


Ø Verbal Idiom
Verbal idioms are kind of idioms which have class of verb as in sentence.

¤ I’d tie on my backhand look at the cloud passing by.

The meaning of look at in the sentence above is to turn your eyes toward something, the other italic which is passing by means to move pass or go pass for a person, person, thing etc.

¤ Don’t let your imagination, run away with you.

The sentence above consist a verbal idiom which marked by the italic words, it means to control.

¤ We could longer agree, I had to break with her.

The sentence break above doesn’t mean to break or crack or destroy something or somebody, but the underlined break means to end a connection or relationship with.

Ø Nominal Idioms

The second kind of verbal idioms is nominal idiom. Based on its definition, nominal idiom is the idioms which have a nominal word class (noun) and usually appeared as nominal phrase which forms idiomatic meaning. Later, it could be explained below:

¤ My father is a man with a few words. He doesn’t really want to state his opinion.

The explanation of italic words above is a man who does not talk very much.

¤ The witness has been received a sum of harsh money for his no talk in the assembly.

Italic words above is a nominal idiom, it can be translated as money paid to prevent some shameful fact which can be known in the public.

¤ The employees have done some dirty work to make a benefit for their selves.

Some dirty work can be interpreted as dishonest or unfaithful work even can be said done a corruption.

Ø Adjectival Idioms

A word or sentence can be said as adjectival idiom if it has adjectival class. Furthermore, the explanation of this idiom can be showed in the sentence as follows:

¤ I can stand myself to wear these clothes anymore; this dress trend is out of date.

The out of date mean is no longer fashionable or exist.

¤ The girl is so surprise and directly glance up the coming sound whose call her name.

The underlined words which are glance up means look quickly.

¤ Minoz is an all around athlete, he talents soccer, badminton, and the others kinds of sports.

All around is an idiom which means doing good in many different things, especially at many different sports.

Ø Phrase Logical Idioms

This idiom type is idioms that do not readily correlate with a given grammatical part of speech and required a paraphrase longer than a word. Often they are in entire clause in length (Boather and Gate, 1975: V1)

From the plain explanation above, it can be conclude that phrase logic idiom is idiom which connects to the grammatical word class indirectly a need paraphrase. It often consist one clause. Moreover, it would be explained below:

¤ I was on my mind when the bells blew my brains out.

Italic sentence which written blew my brains out above means to kill myself by shooting in the head.

¤ After having a brilliant position in office, Danny finally able to keep his head above water.

Words in italic which is keep his head above water means that to earn enough money to remain out of debt.

¤ The new raising actor has a talent to make a noise in the world.

The sentence make a noise in the world refer to its closest meaning, and it can be mean o become famous.

Ø Saying and Proverb

These saying and proverb are the last kind of idiom. Nevertheless, it has to be explained clearly, and below are some of the examples of it.

¤ Because of his lack of knowledge, the building staff quarrelers his tools.

From the sentence above, the researcher would like to give a bit description about the using of saying and proverb idiom. The italic sentence means that building staff tries to excuse his lack of knowledge or his stupidity by blaming the tools for poor workmanship.

¤ Tommy is one of my relative whom came from village. He is a country cousin.

The italic words above means that Tommy was a simple and average person.

Moreover Boather and Gate’s theory is strengthened by the theory of Denoun which famous by his article entitle “kind of idioms” (1976). For clear information in www.wikipedia.com, he classifies idioms into five kinds. The explanations follow:

¤ Lexemic Idioms

In the first explanation of this research, the researcher can simply say that there is an interesting fact about idioms that they are can be easily to identify, especially when we are analysis it in the part of speech. Idioms can sometimes be seen in verbal nature such as get up, look out, watch out, turn off, hold on etc. Later, it also can be found in nominal nature like hot dog (Frankfurter originally food) which serves as a noun. Last, it can also provide as adjectives and also adverbial.

¤ Idiomatic pairs

There are many kinds of pairs in English, it can be followed by word of and. In the next explanation, idiomatic pairs can be found in the adverb forms, noun forms, identical/prepositional forms, adjectives forms, verb forms.

Some common noun pairs and adverb pairs are peace and quite, body and soul, life and limb, grin and bear. The example of adverbial pairs and adjectival pairs are here and there, short and sweet, sick and tired. And the instance for identical/prepositional pairs is on and on, around up, little by little, all in all.

¤ Proverbial Idioms

In his theory, Denoun also include proverbial as one of many idiom kinds. I wish to get up earlier so I can begin my day with a flying star. And then I know it’s said barking dogs seldom bite but a man can’t be too careful.

¤ One-Word Idioms

It can be said as one-word idioms when we find a word with an extreme different meaning from the original meaning of the selected word. Such as (apple) he has an apple laptop. Idiom can be meant in general because the meaning of idiom can not be understood just each individual word.

Tourism Effects in Bali

Tourist destination could possibly say as the temporary consumer. They come to the tourist area in a certain period, using the resources and its facility then leave it to get back to their originate country. All of activities done by the visitors must be something just like spending their money, put their self on pleasure time and it included the thing just like spending a lot of money, and directly works on the economic situation in tourist spot, such as Bali. The effect could e divided into two sides, which is negative and positive.

In economic side, Tourism expect to bring the profitable for the government, businessman, and of course the society. As if for the Balinese, tourism hoped to produce positive side which largely can be categorized as written below:

§  Society Income from Tourism

The exposure of tourist directly and indirectly is the source of income from some of company, organization, even the society which has the business relating to tourism world. The high amount of visitors is the market to local product. Society can have a chance to produce their income and got the pay charge from their job. These kinds of tourism world have many varieties such as tourism businessman, hotel and restaurant employee, tour and travel employee, transportation service provider, guide, souvenir supplier, tourist attraction etc.

This income is the positive effect of tourism that can be said as business income of the organization or company event the foreign exchange earning.  As for the company, this is their priority income used to pay salaries and become the profit to business owner.

§  Labor absorption

Many Balinese suspend their life with tourism. This is the business that can’t stand alone without the support of other sectors. This is one of labor absorption with largely need the employee especially for the famous tourist destination like Bali.

§  The utilization of tourism facilities by local communities

Tourist and local community often share tourist facilities for some of their consideration. In some cases, the existence of tourism in one area or country becomes the crucial difference from economic value relating to the facility of its tourist spot. Tourist can be profitable aspect for the local people so that one facility in tourist destination giving freely by the local people.

§  Development of infrastructure to remote area

In some tourist destination which located in remote area must be need the developing of infrastructure to support it. It could be the proper transportation like roadway, railway, facilities of communication, clean water, electricity, etc. These things could help the spreading of economic activity to the other place. It is one positive thing to mobile the economic life in the whole area of our country.

Tourism Resources in Bali

  

-         Natural Recourses

Tourism resources surely found in every area in the country, it can be uniqueness or mascot for any areas to introduce the original or characteristic to the visitor in the idea of making a better life by passing the tourism way. The writer terminates that the resources are the attribute which can be natural (without the mixing of human) or instead of to make something change and produce something that can satisfy human desire.

In tourism world, tourism resources can be said as something which possesses the potential to explore in the way of supporting tourism world, directly and indirectly. 

Bali must be written as the place which famous by the tourist resources, include water (coast), mountains, amazing panorama, etc. It can be said as tourism resources if “the things” can afford and satisfy human needed because of that Bali need an intervention to change or process it to be the useful one. In the way of developing the aspect, Bali has really good points to make the area as tourist attraction such as the beauty of topography, the unique of flora and fauna, wild life animal and so on. The example of its aspects can be implicated in Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, Tanjung Benoa, Turtle Island, some places that already visited by the writer.

-          Human Resources

This aspect must include because of its vital role in the developing of tourism world. The existence of tourism world can be seizing of the human who act as the stir of it.

In the case of Bali, the utilization of the aspects can be said well maintained because the writer found in her tour experience that some sectors such as Airlines ( Ngurah Rai Airport) considered as a good service, Bus companies- the transportation that used by the writer while her touring in Bali said as a good service, Hotel, Food Service etc while in Bali can mobile and done their profession as a professional one and satisfy the customer.
 -       Cultural Resources

      The uniqueness of Bali is one of important point for their tourism existence. One of many traveling reason can be background by the curiosity of tourist to found out the other life style and their necessary to know about the culture of some area and learn it out.

            Tourism industry in Bali has regarded the existence of the unique culture as charming and multiply the characters as tourist destination. Bali has proved that they can slide the culture attraction as one of their amazing presenting to attract the tourist. The cultural aspect put as one of their basic modal in serving some varieties of cultural acts just like performance art include Legong dance, Barong dance, Kecak dance, art painting, festival, traditional cuisine, history of Bali such as Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Bali, and the way of their unique life such as their Hinduism belief- Ngaben.

The History of Gedung Sate

Gedung Sate well known as the symbol of Bandung city and it also can be a tourist spot which attract the domestic and foreign tourists. The building was built by architect J Gerber in the July 27 1920s, the Dutch East Indies government made plans to move the capital of Dutch East Indies from Batavia to Bandung. It is located at 22 Diponegoro Street. It is called Gedung Sate because of its decorative roof ornaments which similar with sate stick, a common food made by Indonesian. The building was built with the total cost around 6 millions gulden. It is the first building that made by supported actual technology in Indonesia. Gedung Sate becomes an example for several other building in West Java, such as the building of railway station in Tasikmalaya.

During the Dutch colonial time, Gedung Sate was known as the Gouvernements Bedrijvenor GB. The first stone was laid by Johanna Catherina Coops, the eldest daughter of the mayor of Bandung, B. Coops and his wife Petronella Roelofsen, which were the representatives of the Governor-General in Batavia, J.P. Graaf van Limburg Stirum, at 27 July 1920. The building is the result of a planning team that was made up from Ir. J. Gerber, a young architect with name from theTechnische Universiteit Delft in the Netherlands, Ir. Eh. De Roo and Ir. G Hendriks from the local government of Bandoeng.

Gedung Sate is used as the office for the governor and vice-governor sinde 1980, but also as the main building of the governmen of the province of West Java. Earlier they were located in Gedung Kerta Mukti in Jalan Braga. The offices of the governor and vice-governor are located at the second floor of the building. Not all employees around them work at Gedung Sate, some of them work in Gedung Baru.

The uppermost floor is called the Tower of Gedung Sate. This floor can not be seen from downstairs. To reach the floor you have to use the old wooden stairs or a modern elevator. The perfectness of Gedung Sate was completed with the construction of Gedung Baru, which used parts of the original architecture of Gedung Sate to keep the building in context with the older one, was completed in 1977 and was to be used for the House of Representatives of the province of West Java for its daily activities.

Gedung Sate has now become one of the tourist attractions in the city of Bandung. Many visitors from abroad visit Bandung because of their historic relation with this building and the city as well. The historic feeling of this building can best be absorbed then climbing the wooden stairs towards the tower of the building. There are six stairs which have to be ascended before you reach the top.

The beauty of Gedung Sate is completed by the decorative and lush gardens that surround the building and are well cared for. There is no fear that local as well as foreign visitors have to be worried about that. Because of its beauty, the gardens are regularly used for shooting family pictures, music clips for local or national artists or love couples.

Every Sunday, the area around Gedung Sate is opened for public, so they can spend their free day of the week here enjoying the gardens and fresh air of the city or to do some light sporting activity.

Many foreign tourist come to Bandung to see building because they feel an emotional connection to history of Gedung Sate. The well maintaned gardens surrounding Gedung Sate add to its beauty. Especially on Sunday morning, the green areas around Gedung Sate have become a popular choice for people to relax with their family just sitting or doing sport.

Gedung Sate consist 4 floors. The first floor is reception hall, directly straight to the Rhinoceros Unicornis bronze statue. It is often used to hold the Sundanese Music Show when there is the formal visiting or formal ceremony held. Gedung Sate also situated with a sweeping view to Bandung’s famous volcano, Tangkuban Perahu, as well as surrounded by trees, gardens, and prestigious home in the heart of the Garden City district.
